Volunteer
Thank you for considering a volunteer position at The Arc for the River
Valley! Each year, more than 100 volunteers, including our Board of
Directors, contribute over 2,500 hours of their time and energy to ensure
the success of our programs, activities, and events. (See the calendar for
the schedule of upcoming events.)
Prospective volunteers should complete this
form
and contact the office.
All volunteer assignments must be preapproved by The Arc staff.
Activities at The Arc office (2301 South 56th Street, Suite 107, Fort Smith, AR 72903):
-
COMPUTER ACTIVITIES - Our in-office Computer Lab with internet access
allows members to learn new skills or enjoy their favorite educational
programs and games. Thursdays from 11:00 am-1:00 pm are specially
designated for the computers on the calendar, but members can also
utilize them anytime Monday-Friday, 10:00 am-4:00 pm.
-
ART CLASSES - Art classes are held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00
am-1:00 pm. Whether drawing, painting, sculpting, or creating small
handicrafts and holiday gifts, our members use art therapy as a creative
outlet and an opportunity for peer interaction.
-
COOKING CLASSES - Cooking classes are held once a month on a Thursday at
11:00 am as listed on the calendar. Featuring simple preparations, these
classes teach valuable life skills to members.
Bowling at Midland Bowl (2600 North 32nd Street, Fort Smith, AR 72904):
-
BOWLING- Recreational Bowling is held at Midland Bowl on Thursday
evenings at 6:30 pm and on Saturday afternoons at 3:00 pm. Bowling
promotes hand-eye coordination and social skills, as well as providing
physical exercise for our members.
Monthly Special Events (held at various locations as described below):
-
HOLIDAY DANCES/PARTIES - The Mardi Gras Dance in February, Halloween
Dance in October, and Christmas Party in December are our largest
events. Held at the Fort Smith Senior Center, these dances and parties
include a full dinner. Volunteers can help from 3:00 pm-8:00 pm with
set up, serving food, interacting with the participants, and take down.
-
"BARK FOR THE ARC" - Our annual fundraiser is a dog walk held in early
May in Ben Geren Park. Participants walk their dogs and compete for
honors to "Best Dressed", "Largest Dog", "Ugliest Dog", etc. Volunteers
help serve lunch and provide general event support from 8:00 am-12
noon.
-
FISHING DERBY - In June, the lake at Carol Ann Cross Park is stocked
with fish so our members can fish without a fishing license. Prizes are
awarded for the largest fish caught, heaviest fish, etc. Volunteers help
from 8:00 am-12 noon with baiting hooks and taking fish off the lines
or serving lunch to participants.
